This is the story of Ali Cross – Alex Cross’ young son – who wants to become a detective, just like his father, and work towards protecting his community. He thought he would have to wait much longer to follow on his father’s footsteps, but after one of his friends disappears, he decides to investigate the disappearance and won’t stop until he finds his friend.

I have yet to read an Alex Cross book, though there are many to choose from. But I quite enjoyed meeting him in this book, as well as his son Ali Cross of course. One of the things that make this book interesting and perhaps unlike other middle grade books out there is the presence of a dual point of view that includes Ali Cross and his father Alex Cross.

I found that unique and interesting. When we’re not reading about the investigation (and other things) through Ali Cross’ eyes, we’re reading about it through his father’s, an experienced detective. Both POVs are enjoyable, written well, add something to the story overall and are different enough to justify being included. There are no repetitions and it’s rather difficult to dislike the story because the characters are easy to invest oneself in. The case itself may not blow your mind but it’s a decent first case for Ali Cross. Hopefully more are to come.

  1. Happy you could enjoy this one! I have seen James Patterson’s name around so much but I don’t think I have actually ever read anything by this author before. It’s rare that you also get the parent’s point of view in a middle grade so you’re definitely right, that is refreshing!
