REVIEW:

If every Historical Fiction book was like this one, I would read them every day and beg for more. I was certain I would enjoy Park Avenue Summer because it features ambitious women who try to make their own dreams come true instead of waiting for a man to give them what they think they need and want. There is conflict and competition between women but there is also a lot of women supporting women, especially between Alice and her boss Helen, to whom she is very loyal.

Alice’s mother’s dream was to come to New York City and pursue her dream of becoming a model. Alas, she died before she had a chance to prove herself in the big city but Alice is ready to make her mom proud by getting to NY and figuring out a way to become a photographer. She is hired to work as an assistant for a magazine for women with a female boss who wants to revolutionize it. But Alice is not just an assistant to Helen; she is also her biggest fan and a second solid support system, behind her husband David.

I was mesmerized by everything from the very beginning. It’s a real page-turner and one hell of a realistic fiction story. I could swear Alice was real but even if she wasn’t she sure represented many women working hard toward independence and self-fulfillment. Of course, that doesn’t mean she ignores men. On the contrary, she is able to have a sex life in addition to working late hours. Just like any man. Alice sometimes loses sight of her ultimate goal—becoming a photographer—or deliberately refuses to think about it because of a lack of confidence in her own skills but she does grow throughout the story. And what I love most is that she doesn’t do it at the expense of someone else.

I have to check out this author’s previous releases because if they’re all as good as this one I must devour them this instant.

  1. I feel like you would probably enjoy City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert, too. Because it has the same concept: women in the 20s trying to pave the way for themselves and as well, other women. Not a perfect book, but the idea is the same.
