REVIEW:

This is the second most unique story I have read this year, behind Daisy Jones & The Six. There are other books worth mentioning, but somehow very few stories manage to surprise you continuously and unfold so elegantly and meaningfully. This book deserves to be studied by aspiring writers out there, that’s how worthy of our attention it is.

I loved Ursa the moment she appeared in the story, which did not take long at all. She and Jo’s interactions are priceless. Jo is a graduate student working on a project related to nature to obtain her Ph.D. and Ursa is a young girl who claims to be an alien in search of five miracles. Jo has no time to care for a child, but she also can’t get rid of Ursa, despite her attempts. Looks like they’re stuck together. For how long, no one knows.

I would have enjoyed this story even if it had been only about Jo and Ursa, but interestingly other characters are introduced and involved in this delicate situation. Relationships are developed and secrets surface from unexpected places. I first thought this would be a magical realism story, full with wondrous fantasy elements, which would have been welcome, but it stays very realistic while having this almost fairytale-esque atmosphere.

Believe me, I wish I could give it five full stars. But alas, the last chapters, while well-written, changed everything—the story, relationships, vibe—too suddenly. It’s a satisfying ending, no doubt. Yet, it felt rushed. It did not, however, lower my love for the characters. I am down to read a companion novel from Ursa’s perspective anytime.
