Once upon a time–long, long ago, when dinosaurs roamed the Earth–an egg rolled away from its mother and landed in the ocean, where it froze solid and stayed peacefully for thousands of years. Then one day Santa and his elves discover the frozen egg, and Santa sits on it to see if it will hatch. But he can’t guess what’s inside. . . . A dinosaur! Meanwhile, a young boy named William Trundle has only ever wished for one thing for Christmas: a dinosaur! So when Santa accidentally gives William the real Christmasaurus instead of a stuffed replica, it’s the BEST CHRISTMAS EVER! Until an evil man known as the Hunter decides a dinosaur will be the perfect addition to his collection.
If you’re like any of my friends, you’re probably making a strange face at seeing me finish a Christmas story, but believe me when I say I was DYING to read anything cute and not gore-related. People have pushed scary stories and movies on me, but really all I needed today was a cute boy who finds a dinosaur in his room on Christmas day.
This was a delight from start to finish. The writing is lovely, the narrator enchanting, the illustrations wonderful and the characters memorable. There are clichés—like the villainous behaviours and the bullying situation—but I think the original elements are great enough to overlook what may have lacked imagination.
It’s a story that keeps you interested and keeps going somewhere. It doesn’t slow down for no reason whatsoever or focus too much on one specific element. It’s predictable, but the good kind. For instance, you know the dinosaur is going to find his way into William’s room, but you don’t know how. And you know they’re going to bond, but you don’t know when that will happen. Nothing blew me away, but everything warmed my heart.
I know it’s not Christmas, but it’s almost November, and if you’re looking for joy, comfort and warmth, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. I was supposed to see someone today, but they bailed on me, and you know what I don’t care because I had this book to keep me company and it made me happier than I’m sure that person would have. (That was a bit passive-aggressive, sorry, and I’m sure I would have had amazing moments with that person XD).
