Nora has bad luck with men. When she meets an (actual) bear on a hike in the Los Angeles hills, he turns out to be the best romantic partner she’s ever had! He’s considerate, he’s sweet, he takes care of her. But he’s a bear, and winning over her friends and family is difficult. Not to mention he has to hibernate all winter. Can true love conquer all?
There is so much cuteness here.
You know what my first thought was when I heard of this graphic novel? It wasn’t that this looked completely nuts—although that thought followed at some point—but that this must be ridiculously fun.
You’d think that such a story wouldn’t take itself too seriously, that the characters would be aware of how weird their situations are, and Nora is… kind of. But she’s also OVER men, and when Bear came along, she welcomed him with open arms.
Their relationship is serious not only because they live together and spend every second they can together and truly love each other, but also because Nora’s friends and family members have met the bear and they have their own opinions on him.
At the same time, it’s so ‘‘innocent’’ that you simply can’t help but find it adorable, even if Nora is a little bit (a lot) in denial about the healthiness of her relationship with Bear. After all, he is an *animal* she will never be able to marry and have kids with should she suddenly wish to.
But hey, who cares, it’s so cute and obviously fiction written and illustrated for our entertainment. Not a story I will reread – since it is rather predictable and heavy on the romance/cuddling – but that managed to make me smile. So thank you for bringing me joy, book.
