BLURB:

Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, and Stacey are best friends and founding members of The Baby-sitters Club. Whatever comes up — cranky toddlers, huge dogs, scary neighbors, prank calls — you can count on them to save the day. But baby-sitting isn’t always easy, and neither is dealing with strict parents, new families, fashion emergencies, and mysterious secrets. But no matter what, the BSC have what they need most: friendship.

The full colour edition is gorgeous. I remember seeing the original version of this series at my library, when I was around eleven years old, and I always meant to read it someday, but I wasn’t excited about it then because there was no colour and I loved coloured graphic novels.

So I’m definitely happy and I’m sure fans of this series are happy too. I’m also happy this series ended up being a success, otherwise the colouring would never have happened. I’ve read previous works from Raina Telgemeier, so I knew I would like this right away.

But it still surprised me. It’s not unusual for graphic novels to entertain me and pull me into their worlds. However, I did not expect this story to feel so right. As I read it, I remembered all the times my friends and I would create new games and find creative ways of getting money. It brought me back to my childhood and for that I am extremely grateful to this book.

All of the characters are realistic and relatable, especially Kristy, the main character in this volume. Although there is attention given to Kristy’s friends, the plot centers on the relationship between Kristy, her mother and her soon-to-become stepfather. Kristy does not like the man her mother is dating. It’s awkward for her to see her mom with someone other than her father, but the Baby-Sitters Club ends up helping her deal with this issue.

Very heart-warming, engaging and timeless.

  1. I think I read the original novel of this story in elementary school, but I can’t remember. I know I’ve seen the movie adaptation of the series, though! I think I would probably love the graphic novel adaptation! My sister is turning 9 years old — maybe I’ll grab a copy to share with her! Lovely review!
