In the third volume of this critically acclaimed Webcomic series, Annie and Kat continue to uncover terrible secrets about their school, Gunnerkrigg Court, while relationships grow and the boundaries of reality are blurred. In the meantime, Coyote begins to show that things in the forest are not quite what they seem! Plus, Annie’s second year at the Court comes to a dramatic end!
What I like most about this series, aside from the endearing characters, is how balanced it is. Every new chapter has a new adventure in store for Antimony and Kat, with the now overprotective Reynardine tagging along.
Sometimes the chapters are dark, revealing hidden truths about the court and its past, but sometimes the chapters are light and so entertaining, enabling you to take a break from the darker, gloomier side of Gunnerkrigg Court.
For example, at the beginning of this book, Antimony’s class, led by the one and only Dragon Slayer of Gunnerkrigg Court, are camping in the woods, next to mechanical cows with laser eyes. Something is happening in the woods, seeing that the campers are being kidnapped one by one, therefore Antimony uses her abilities to uncover the mystery.
Actually, this book is a lot about Antimony developing her powers and gaining training to become (possibly) the future medium of the Court. She learns about the history of the court in order to understand herself and the people who are requesting her abilities better (i.e. Jeannie, Coyote, Ms. Jones, etc.). Learning about the Court and its figures also helps her learn about her own family.
So many secrets are revealed. I did not find this confusing at all, although the same cannot be said for the previous volumes. Of course I still have many questions, but I’m sure the answers are sitting patiently, concealed in the future chapters, waiting for me to open the door and discover them. Don’t mind if I do.
