Aventurine is the fiercest, bravest dragon there is. And she’s ready to prove it to her family by leaving the safety of their mountain cave and capturing the most dangerous prey of all: a human. But when the human she finds tricks her into drinking enchanted hot chocolate, Aventurine is transformed into a puny human girl with tiny blunt teeth, no fire, and not one single claw.
But she’s still the fiercest creature in the mountains — and now she’s found her true passion: chocolate! All she has to do is get herself an apprenticeship (whatever that is) in a chocolate house (which sounds delicious), and she’ll be conquering new territory in no time…won’t she?
This book is a treasure chest.
It’s one of those fantastic reads that are so under-the-radar you have to look for them for a long time before you find them.
But when you do find them and you do read them, stars explode. As a fan of middle grade books, I had to give this one a try. Hello – dragons + chocolate? Need one say more?
I will anyway. This is a very original story. A girl-dragon seeks a human to destroy and is transformed into a girl-human in the process.
I’m aware that it may look like it, but this isn’t one of those empty delights – you know those books that are extraordinarily entertaining but not at all moral or full of themes.
On the contrary, Stephanie Burgis has a lot to teach us about finding your passion, dealing with disapproving parents and trusting yourself to do great things.
Not only was I entirely charmed by Aventurine and her adventures, but I was also impressed by how creatively the author made chocolate an essential element to the story. So essential that without it, there wouldn’t be a story to tell.
I’m only the more delighted to learn this is a series. I’m hoping there will be many sequels in the future. Aventurine’s story has only just begun! Will she ever find the mage who changed her life? Now that she has discovered something important about herself, will that change the course of her destiny?
