Best Fairytale Retellings

Dear readers, my love for fairytale retellings is incomparable. I have read them ever since I learned how to read and, even today, I cannot spend two weeks without reading them. They are truly magical and wonderful – most of them, anyway. Making this list was hard for me, but here are my favourite fairytale retellings!

7. Wildwood Dancing – 4 stars

Retelling of ‘‘The Twelve Dancing Princesses.’’ The moment I started reading this book, I couldn’t stop. I even read half of it out loud, just because I loved the sound of the words too much. It was just a delight to read it. If it weren’t for a certain despicable – atrocious – character inside of it (ruining the girls’ lives) I would gladly have given it a five-star rating.

6. The Pedlar and the Bandit King – 4 stars

Gay Retelling of ‘‘Little Red Riding Hood.’’ M/M romance, you guys! Oh and what a romantic one at that! The characters are so endearing and I swear I actually swooned during steamy scenes. It’s a slow-burn. Sadly, the sequel is not as good, as it is not a retelling, but I still think this first book to be incredible. Given, the slowness can be a turn-off, but I think you will get too attached to the characters to be bothered by it.

5. Ella Enchanted – 4 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Cinderella.’’ You probably already know all about this classic retelling. You may have seen the lovely movie or read the book. This is a special case where I don’t find it troublesome to watch the movie and immediately after read the book (or vice versa). It’s that interesting and beautifully-written as well as narrated. The kind of book to read over and over again.

4. Cruel Beauty – 4 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Beauty and the Beast.’’ It’s thanks to this book that I was introduced to an amazing author of fairytales. Rosamund Hodge! Her stories are so inventive and magical she is definitely on my list of top 15 favourite authors. Every time she releases a new book, I jump with excitement! Cruel Beauty is surprising with all its twists and turns and its especially strong heroine.

3. The Forbidden Wish – 4.5 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Aladdin.’’ Stop right here. Seriously, you need not finish reading this post. Go straight to your library (or a retailer of your choice) and loan/purchase this book. Alright? Yes, you need to. Not only is this retelling exquisitely-written, but its world-building and characters make it an instant classic in the genre. You will not forget this story. Plus, it’s part of a series! (Forgive my earlier bossyness.)

2. A Court of Thorns and Roses – 5 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Beauty and the Beast.’’ It’s no secret that Beauty and the Beast is my favourite fairytale. I could read retelling after retelling of it. To be honest, I am quite difficult with them, because of how many I read and my expectations ever-growing – higher, higher than a mountain – but it’s always a delight to read them. Sarah J. Maas’ one is enthralling and romantic. Everything a retelling should be, really.

1. Scarlet – 5 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Little Red Riding Hood.’’ I also enjoyed Cinder (retelling of Cinderella) but Scarlet manages to be action-filled, romantic, humorous, adventurous and mysterious all at once! That’s truly incredible. I enjoyed myself so much reading this. Marissa Meyer’s writing is beyond enchanting! She mesmerizes me with her words. Every single time. If you haven’t started The Lunar Chronicles yet, I pray thee. Do so.
