Best Fairytale Retellings

Dear readers, my love for fairytale retellings is incomparable. I have read them ever since I learned how to read and, even today, I cannot spend two weeks without reading them. They are truly magical and wonderful – most of them, anyway. Making this list was hard for me, but here are my favourite fairytale retellings!

139297. Wildwood Dancing 4 stars

Retelling of ‘‘The Twelve Dancing Princesses.’’ The moment I started reading this book, I couldn’t stop. I even read half of it out loud, just because I loved the sound of the words too much. It was just a delight to read it. If it weren’t for a certain despicable – atrocious – character inside of it (ruining the girls’ lives) I would gladly have given it a five-star rating.

32368136. The Pedlar and the Bandit King4 stars

Gay Retelling of ‘‘Little Red Riding Hood.’’ M/M romance, you guys! Oh and what a romantic one at that! The characters are so endearing and I swear I actually swooned during steamy scenes. It’s a slow-burn. Sadly, the sequel is not as good, as it is not a retelling, but I still think this first book to be incredible. Given, the slowness can be a turn-off, but I think you will get too attached to the characters to be bothered by it.

243375. Ella Enchanted4 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Cinderella.’’ You probably already know all about this classic retelling. You may have seen the lovely movie or read the book. This is a special case where I don’t find it troublesome to watch the movie and immediately after read the book (or vice versa). It’s that interesting and beautifully-written as well as narrated. The kind of book to read over and over again.

158399844. Cruel Beauty4 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Beauty and the Beast.’’ It’s thanks to this book that I was introduced to an amazing author of fairytales. Rosamund Hodge! Her stories are so inventive and magical she is definitely on my list of top 15 favourite authors. Every time she releases a new book, I jump with excitement! Cruel Beauty is surprising with all its twists and turns and its especially strong heroine.

ForbiddenWish_BOM.indd3. The Forbidden Wish 4.5 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Aladdin.’’ Stop right here. Seriously, you need not finish reading this post. Go straight to your library (or a retailer of your choice) and loan/purchase this book. Alright? Yes, you need to. Not only is this retelling exquisitely-written, but its world-building and characters make it an instant classic in the genre. You will not forget this story. Plus, it’s part of a series! (Forgive my earlier bossyness.)

160968242. A Court of Thorns and Roses5 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Beauty and the Beast.’’ It’s no secret that Beauty and the Beast is my favourite fairytale. I could read retelling after retelling of it. To be honest, I am quite difficult with them, because of how many I read and my expectations ever-growing – higher, higher than a mountain – but it’s always a delight to read them. Sarah J. Maas’ one is enthralling and romantic. Everything a retelling should be, really.

132067601. Scarlet5 stars

Retelling of ‘‘Little Red Riding Hood.’’ I also enjoyed Cinder (retelling of Cinderella) but Scarlet manages to be action-filled, romantic, humorous, adventurous and mysterious all at once! That’s truly incredible. I enjoyed myself so much reading this. Marissa Meyer’s writing is beyond enchanting! She mesmerizes me with her words. Every single time. If you haven’t started The Lunar Chronicles yet, I pray thee. Do so.

  1. Love this post! I also love retelling so much and also like you, my favorite fairy tale to be retold is obviously Beauty and the Beast! ❤ I totally agree on number 1 through 4 but the rest I haven't had the chance to read 😦 if I could add some to the list, I'll ad The Wrath and the Dawn and the rest of The Lunar Chronicles 😛

  2. I absolutely *love* fairytale retellings, and there are a few here I never even heard about! Which means, I’m going to go read them… like, right now.
But anyway… I agree with you – Cruel Beauty is the book that introduced me to Rosamuns Hodge who writes fantastic retellings.
Scarlet was also the book that *really* got me into The Lunar Chronicles. I enjoyed Cinder, but it was in Scarlet that I was really-truly into that world and characters.
My favorite retellings? I atually made a post about it: http://magiverse.blogspot.co.il/2016/06/once-upon-time-there-was-favorite.html
In which I, sadly, forgot to add Cruel Beauty. Imagine it’s there ^^
Great post, Lola! I can’t wait to try out some of the books you mentiond (:

P.S: A gay retelling? Oh my god, I nver even heard of that! Must check it out.
And Ella Enchanted? I haven’t read the book but I did watch the movie a few times (:

  3. I’ve only read Cinder and I loved it, a lot, so I’m eager to read Scarlet too. And Cruel Beauty and ACOTAR are very high on my TBR! Haha. I’ll look into The Forbidden Wish as well ❤

  4. So far my favorite retelling has been The Wrath & The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh which is a retelling of, I believe, “A Thousand and One Nights”. To be honest, I think this might be the only retelling I’ve ever read!

  5. I am not a big fan of retellings because I don’t really enjoy fairy tales (and my terrible memory has wiped away most of the stories) but I hear so much about The Lunar Chronicles that I think I should read it 🙂

  6. I’m a big fan of fairy tale retellings too! I agree with Ella Enchanted, Wildwood Dancing, ACOTAR, and Scarlet… basically the ones I’ve read on your list haha.
The others I’ve added to my TBR list. Thanks for the post~!

  7. I’ve just realized the only retellings I’ve read are Beauty and the Beast retellingts; ACOTAR and Beastly (which I love them both and ACOTAR is my favorite). I need to pick up some more fairytale retellings! Great post and reccomendations. 😄

  8. Ha, for some unfortunate reason, only the bad retellings have stuck in my head. But I definitely think the Cinder series was a very clever reimagining of the classic tales, with a good balance of new stuff and throwback to the source material.

  9. Thanks for the recommendations! I told myself to branch out of my comfort zone of contemporary romance and dystopia/apocalyptic books so I’m in dire need of recommendations from genres such as this. Thanks! 😀

  10. Great post! I also love fairy tale retellings and I yet… How did I have no idea that The Lunar Chronicles was one!? I haven’t read these yet but they have just made a massive jump up on my TBR list.

  11. I agree with Ella Enchanted and Cruel Beauty; I really enjoyed both. I’m not a fan of The Lunar Chronicles, though, as I found the world-building weak.

One of my all-time favourite books is Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones, which is a retelling of two old poems. Diana Wynne Jones and Gail Carson Levine are both good writers to turn to if you want fairytale retellings (or just stories with a fairytale flavour); a couple of my other favourites are Howl’s Moving Castle (DWJ) and The Two Princesses of Bamarre (GCL).
