BLURB:

In a land where three suns almost never set, a fledgling killer joins a school of assassins, seeking vengeance against the powers who destroyed her family.

Daughter of an executed traitor, Mia Corvere is barely able to escape her father’s failed rebellion with her life. Alone and friendless, she hides in a city built from the bones of a dead god, hunted by the Senate and her father’s former comrades. But her gift for speaking with the shadows leads her to the door of a retired killer, and a future she never imagined.

Now, Mia is apprenticed to the deadliest flock of assassins in the entire Republic—the Red Church. If she bests her fellow students in contests of steel, poison and the subtle arts, she’ll be inducted among the Blades of the Lady of Blessed Murder, and one step closer to the vengeance she desires. But a killer is loose within the Church’s halls, the bloody secrets of Mia’s past return to haunt her, and a plot to bring down the entire congregation is unfolding in the shadows she so loves.

Will she even survive to initiation, let alone have her revenge?

I can’t… finish this.

Just thinking about it makes my head ache.

The writing is so… thick. Like every message, action, description that is meant to reach the reader through it is compressed to the point where trying to dismantle it takes too much energy.

If that’s not a reason to prematurely close a book, I don’t know what is.

The truth is, I think I would have liked this, had it not been written in such a painful way and had it not possessed flashbacks meant, it seemed, more to confuse us than anything else.

I really didn’t have a formidable reading experience with Nevernight. This was my first Jay Kristoff book, one I was looking extremely forward to, but boy do I want to stay away from this author in the future. My poor head.

The story looked badass, actually badass, with assassins and revenge plots and kills and vendetta and darkness and fantasy. I couldn’t wait to dive into it.

But the reality is different. First, it’s more perplexing than original and the so-called world-building that we’re introduced to is overshadowed by the horrendous writing style full of figures of style I wanted to smother more than decorticate… and the heroine.

The heroine whom, may I add, is a demon. I think? She’s awful. Any semblance of emotion that she may have been able to make her body feel in the past is gone, and now, only darkness slithers under her skin.

That should have made me love her. It should have. Alas, I felt no connection to her whatsoever and couldn’t even cheer her on her killings – which I’m usually glad to do, for antiheroes.

Sometimes I feel a little sad about not finishing a book, but in this case? God no. Stay away from me, Nevernight. I mean it.

  1. You’re officialy the first negative reviewer of Nevernight I met so far (:
You know, it’s really brave of you to go ahead and say you didn’t like a book that practically everyone – including me, even though I haven’t read it yet – are worshipping.
I’m sorry I couldn’t read your review, it’s just that… I’m so highly anticipating Nevernight that I don’t want to get my hopes down by reading a negative review of it (which usually happens to me when I read a negative review for a book I’m excited for). After I read the book, though, I’ll be back to read your review (:
    It’s a shame you didn’t like it.

  2. Oh what a shame! I’m still excited to read this, but ouch, I know exactly what you mean by the thick prose. That’s disappointing to hear, because one issue I had with his Lotus War trilogy was his purple prose and I guess that habit hasn’t gone away.

  3. This is super refreshing to read- the book looks great, so it was intriguing to see your review! I’m actually really curious what you meant by thick prose- was the author just trying to wrap too much into each and every word/gesture/thought? Or being overly deep? I’d love to hear more about what you thought 🙂

  4. Oh no. I did not see this one coming. I liked Stormdancer and I really enjoyed his books with Amie Kaufman, so I had such high hopes for this one. I see what you mean, though. The writing that comes across as condescending would really bother me too.

  5. This is the second negative review I’ve seen of this book – and while I’ve enjoyed the author’s other works, the quotes I’ve seen from this one depict a really overdone writing style! I’ll probably still check out the book, but I’m definitely wary now.

  6. Oh I am so sorry that you didn’t like this one! I just got there ARC and I was so excited! I read Illuminae and absolutely loved it. Sigh. Maybe I will feel differently, but I am not as excited to read it now. Oh well. Great review.

  7. People were losing their minds in anticipation over this one! You are actually the second negative review I have read, so at least you are not alone 🙂 I was probably never going to pick this one up anyways lol

  8. sad to hear you didn’t enjoy this … or even finish it. I know what you mean about overly written prose, sometimes I feel the author tries too hard to impress us with words that they lose the story. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  9. This review actually doesnt suprise me despite all the positivity this author seems to get. I read Illuminae and hated it so I thought I should give Nevernight a chance but maybe not… The writing style is a big part on what I choose to read. I loved your review

  10. I believe this is the first negative review I’ve seen of this book – it’s been getting nothing but praise. Though I HAVE heard some strange things about Kristoff’s writing. I’ve only ever read his Illuminae – which was co-authored, so I don’t know how I’ll fare with this one. It’s my next read, so we’ll see how it goes. This was a wonderful review. 🙂

  11. Oh, I’m sorry you didn’t like this one. I’m usually put off by books that require extra (a lot) more effort to read, because I read for fun and relaxation most of the time and I don’t want to stress myself even more.
