BLURB:

Sometimes danger is hard to see… until it’s too late.

Britt Pfeiffer has trained to backpack the Teton Range, but she isn’t prepared when her ex-boyfriend, who still haunts her every thought, wants to join her. Before Britt can explore her feelings for Calvin, an unexpected blizzard forces her to seek shelter in a remote cabin, accepting the hospitality of its two very handsome occupants—but these men are fugitives, and they take her hostage.

In exchange for her life, Britt agrees to guide the men off the mountain. As they set off, Britt knows she must stay alive long enough for Calvin to find her. The task is made even more complicated when Britt finds chilling evidence of a series of murders that have taken place there… and in uncovering this, she may become the killer’s next target.

But nothing is as it seems in the mountains, and everyone is keeping secrets, including Mason, one of her kidnappers. His kindness is confusing Britt. Is he an enemy? Or an ally?

REVIEW:

Hmm, this is a hard one to review. While I would change a few—many—things about the characters, I still enjoyed it and found it suspenseful and unpredictable.

I did see some things happening but then there were always those details and new information that made me doubt. It was pretty well done. The author did a good job step from paranormal (Hush, Hush) to thriller. I was surprised by the course of events in the plot.

The way this story begins, you will think that maybe it’s going to be one like so many many other stories attempting to achieve being thrilling as well as suspenseful and captivating. Well, it is not an attempt in this case, since the author actually succeeded with all of those elements..

As for the main character, Britt, that so many reviewers seem to complain about…what can I say? She does do stuff you could roll your eyes at or just say ‘‘Damn girl, how could you do that?’’ but what is good is that she gets a character development.

Also, the fact that Britt went through something so shocking—being kidnapped—did make me sympathize with her character and start seeing her more like a girl who did not deserve to be held captive when she was expecting to spend a nice weekend with her best friend (and this latter’s brother) in the mountains than a spoiled one. And the fact that she tried with all her heart to free herself and help her best friend did get my respect.

Basically, she’s not the worst character ever. Not at all.

The writing was great, but that didn’t surprise me since I wasn’t expecting less from Becca Fitzpatrick, having read her Hush, Hush series and loved it. She just has such a way of writing that makes it seem like it’s so easy for her and that the words they just come naturally in her mind.

The story may not have felt realistic, but the writing made up for it for sure. I can’t believe everything that happened in this story because it’s a little complex and involving too many characters and situations that aren’t ones on which people normally base themselves to murder people but then again…it can happen, nothing’s impossible, unfortunately—in this context.

I’m still not sure if I enjoyed the romance or not…because love-triangle. Well, not the usual kind but a love-triangle stays a love-triangle, right? And for this one it is hard to determine if it worked well because the love interests aren’t angels and there’s this thing about each of them that would make you back away but also get you very curious. I’m in a dilemma right now but what I know is that it wasn’t bad. Interesting to read about actually.

It would have been good if there were more of a developed friendship between Britt and Korbie. Britt kept saying that Korbie was her best friend but that wasn’t a very healthy friendship, in my opinion. I mean, Korbie compares herself to Britt way too much for it to be normal and not intense jealousy.

I think this is worth the shot. Maybe you won’t like the main character at first but, please, don’t let her self at the beginning of the story make up your definitive mind about her. Give her a chance; she deserves one, in my opinion.

My review on Goodreads.

  1. I’ve been so curious about Black Ice, so I’m glad to see you enjoyed it for the most part. I tend to like flawed and imperfect heroines and like seeing their character growth. Thanks for the great review Lola – I’m keeping my eye on this one 🙂

  2. I’m due to read this one soon as well and you’ve got me excited, Lola! Great review, girl!

I’m not one for love triangles but I can’t hate otherwise I’d have to hate everything, right? xD Despite what everyone says, I’m still a sucker for a good thriller!

  3. Love triangle???? Hmmm. That really doesn’t work well for me but OKAY. I’m still intrigued, though I haven’t read the authors first books, I really want to read this one. As long as the main character gets character development, I will tolerate her 😀

Lovely review, Lola! I can’t wait to read the book as well.

  4. This is a very nice review! I haven’t read the Hush, Hush series (and I probably won’t) but this book is getting a bit of hype and I’m intrigued. The love triangle is… well, not what I’m looking for (I’m so done with them. Is the same with insta-love, I can’t even…) but maybe I give it a go

  5. I felt much the same way about this one Lola! There were definitely times Britt made me role my eyes, but I was all sorts of caught up in this story and just had fun reading it. Sometimes I just want a book that makes me ignore my real life and read it all in one sitting, and this was that type of book:)

  6. I was quite curious about this when I heard it was a thriller as it’s a really big transition. However I’m really glad that Becca managed to do that nicely. 🙂 But the problem is that I really don’t like the sound of the main character. I get easily annoyed but girls that make stupid decisions so yeah. I will have to give this one a try. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 Great review, Lola 🙂

  7. I like how you addressed some of the things other negative reviews did so I can kind of see both ways. The MC definitely wouldn’t bother me knowing she’s like that almost for the purpose of character development, I love stuff like that. If she continued to be like that and didn’t grow then it would have been an issue. Her writing is very easy to get into! I didn’t care TOO much for Hush, Hush after the second book but they were okay. I think I just didn’t care for the romance.

  8. I’ve been hesitant on reading this one because of the…not so positive hype with Becca’s Hush, Hush trilogy, but it sounds like she has grown a bit as a writer between then and now. It’s a shame that in the beginning some people might see Brittany in a negative light and get thrown off, but I’m glad you were find reasons to like her. The love triangle might not be my thing, but I’m glad it was handled well regardless.

Thanks for sharing Lola, and BRILLIANT review! ❤

  9. I haven’t read any of Becca Fitzpatrick’s books but my friend loved her Hush Hush series and is looking forward to this one! I think I’d be more willing to try this one though since I’m more of a thriller suspense girl. Thanks for talking about the good and bad of the main character. I do enjoy a book with character development. Lovely review 🙂

  10. I have mixed feelings about Becca Fitzpatrick. I enjoyed Hush, Hush and have the sequel languishing on my bookshelf because I made the mistake of reading some less-than-stellar reviews. While I may not read this one, your review makes me want to pick the Hush, Hush trilogy back up.

  11. Hmm, I’ve read a couple books in the Hush Hush series, but I didn’t know that Fitzpatrick had a new book out. Is this one the beginning of a series or standalone?

Sometimes I tend to connect with MCs that do really dumb things. I do dumb things sometimes too. 😛

  12. Glad to see that you liked this one, Lola! I’m quite hesitant because of her Hush Hush book which many of my friends hated, but it seems this one is a lot better than the former in many ways. I usually don’t mind an unlikeable hero/heroine as long as there is character development later on. That’s what flaws are for, right? 😉

  13. Hellllllo! Long time no talk 🙂 I’m glad you liked this as a whole, Lola. Predictability is almost always there since we read so much and after some time we just know what’s coming next in all sorts of stories, but if the author takes it to somewhere else or makes us doubt? That’s a sign of a good author. Yay for character development for Britt and yes! It’s easy to sympathize with her. A love triangle? 😦 That sucks. But they can be done well.. Sometimes. Great review, Lola!
