Two seasoned operatives finally meet their match: each other.
Cillian works for the mysterious Special Branch 20: an organization that runs black ops commissioned by the British government. His specialty is deep undercover assignments with virtually no support. He’s been alone for so long that he no longer knows anything else.
Mal’s also used to being alone. Wanted in several states and even more countries, he’s not allowed in the vicinity of any of his former Navy SEAL teammates. And his current assignment is to track Cillian in order to discover the spook’s endgame. Except he’s no longer sure which one of them is getting played.
Cillian isn’t about to let the mission that’s consumed him for the past several years crumble because an outsider is poking around where he doesn’t belong. But Mal forces his way through Cillian’s defenses—and into his heart—exposing a devastating betrayal that could destroy them both.
REVIEW:
I’m confused.
I’m not sure I liked this book, but it was a fast-paced read, so that at least helped a lot with making the reading experience more enjoyable.
The thing is…this is a short story (94 pages) but contains a quite heavy plot with so many characters that I often had to take a break and be like who is that guy? Why is he doing that? What is he talking about? I say HE because there are NO females in this book. It is not a PROBLEM since it does make the story more realistic.
So, about the characters…as I said, there are many:
Cillian, Mal, John, Vince Kelly, Prophet, Trent, Morse, Shelby, Peter, Karl, Tom, and I’m sure I’ve missed some.
I can’t describe them all because some are present and some are less present and we don’t know that much about them in fact. Even our main characters, Cillian and Mal, are guys that almost feel like strangers to me, even after finishing this book.
As you may have guessed, they’re both attracted to each other but, believe it or not, even though they had sex, they never had a passionate kiss.
Again this is a fast-paced read but sometimes TOO fast. You know the kind of fast that makes you read and then stop and realise that you didn’t roger ANYTHING.
The sex scenes can easily be called as HOT, but you need to know that there is BDSM since that may not appeal to everyone. I personally didn’t mind it.
I would love to say that they had a beautiful chemistry.
But they didn’t…
I guess that’s because they’re both stressed and mostly think about their job or sex. It would have been nice for them to have a real date. I think that could have brought a sparkle in their ‘relationship’ but then again I guess it wasn’t possible with them seeking people.
At least, the writing was VERY good. I really liked it and would definitely read another book by this author but, this time, probably one with 200+ pages. That would work better for me, I believe.
I read some reviews in which the reviewers said that they see this book as a novella for the Catch a Ghost series. Even though I haven’t read that series, I think it would be a good idea to do so before picking book 2 up.

So. I don’t really read this genre. Hahaha. But I want to keep an open mind about things so I might try it soon. Maybe not this book though, but since you mentioned that the writing is okay, maybe I’ll check out the other works of the author. 😛
What an honest review, Lola! ❤

The writing is GREAT. 😉 It’s kinda the best thing in the book (except for the sex scenes. ^^) Hahah, I know you don’t really read this genre. I didn’t either before last January. Thank you, Paula. ❤

I felt the same way about this one Lola! Her books are hugely hit or miss with me – sometimes they blow me away and sometimes they leave me wondering what the hell just happened. This book fell in the latter category. I enjoy the Prophet/Tom books, but even having read them, I still couldn’t really grasp what was going on plot-wise. I did like the twist at the end, but these two have a long way to go for me before I would call their story a romance:)

I didn’t know you read M/M romance, Jenny! 😀 I’m so glad to hear that we have this in common. Hum, agree agree agree. Even though it’s my first book by this author, I do like her style but think I should get used to need. Next time I’ll be prepared ha ha ha. 😉

It sounds like there was a lot packed into only 94 pages, maybe too much. Sorry you didn’t like this one better.

Sorry it didn’t work out for you! But from reading this review, I wouldn’t give it a go either.

LOL the Supernatural gif. xD Dean always makes the best ones with his crazy expressions!
Oh, gosh. I don’t think that I would like this book due to the fact that there are so many characters! I just can’t take that many people all at once!
I don’t really think that this book is really for me. It doesn’t sound the best, and I totally trust your opinion, Lola! Gorgeous review!

Me neither, especially because it was a SHORT STORY!
Aww, thanks 😀 a lot!

I’ve had experiences like this with books where its fast paced but I’m not 100 percent on the story. It does sound interesting though 🙂 Great review!

All those characters! For a novella that’s really quite a lot, which is okay, IF at least the main characters stood out and were developed. Too bad 😦 At least the sex scenes worked! Though, again, I really like my sex with a bit of romance. Great review!

Yeah I know right? It felt like they kind of just needed sex without the I-want-to-get-to-know-you part. They did talk a little but I just didn’t feel it. Thanks, Berls. =)

Oh my. I’m so glad I found you! I’m always on the look out for some great M/M books, and to be honest, readers of this genre tend to be closeted. I don’t know why. I’ll be stalking your blog for some good reccs!

That’s so nice, thank you! 😀 I love M/M books and LGBT in general! I know what you mean although on Goodreads it’s much better. Haha, I can be explicit though I simply consider it as honesty lol plus it IS an adult book 😉

Wait, it’s a short and there are so many characters? WUT? Ooookay. So sorry you didn’t connect with the characters, Lola. I prefer BDSM to be slight, not FSoG style. More like.. Kiss the Sky (by Krista and Becca Ritchie) style? Yep. That’s more like it! I’m glad you liked the writing. LOL! I hope the 200+ book works better for you 😀 Great review, Lola!

Yep, not good to include so many characters. There needs to be a balance. WHAT’S FSoG??? Full Sex on the Go?? Is that it lol coz I never heard that before. o.O Thank you!! 😀

I have yet to read this series, but I recently read a M/M series with a BDSM theme, Deputy Joe by can’trememberhisname, and I liked it a lot. I should probably give this a try eventually, but in the right order. I prefer contemporary and low-angst for my M/M.

Okay, yeah I understand. I personally LOVE angst but I know it’s not for everyone since it can get overwhelming. I do recommend the Catch a Ghost series first (of what I heard) if you decide to try this book.

I’m pretty sure I would have been confused, too, Lola. But I do love M/M romances – when there is loads of chemistry between the main characters. And I also enjoy some kissing when I read about the sex 🙂 Maybe I’ll give this series a try – some of the characters might seem more familiar if they appear in longer stories, right?
Thanks for sharing 🙂

They might, yeah. I think it could have been so much better as a longer story since 94 is REALLY short for everything to be included and perfect and for characterization. Thank YOU.^^

Ah yes you’re right it’s short, 94 isn’t a lot for a full book but the idea is interesting. I hope the sequel is better

Oh that’s unfortunate. I read my first by her recently under her other name–Stephanie Tyler–and had some troubles with it as well even though it was full length. Still felt like it needed something more to it. Hope when you give her another go it works better for ya!

I didn’t know she had another name. 😛 Thanks for sharing that with me. I will try her Catch a Ghost series. ^^
