BLURB:

I have always wondered why you never asked about my name. Was I so superficial to you? So stereotypical and mundane? Why did you treat me as if I were just the monster of the week? You know what I think? You never had the time to really hate me. You wanted to hate me, long before you even met me. You wanted to scrape my existence and avenge your childhood princess by laying all blame on me. What if they didn’t call me the Evil Queen, what if I told you the real story from my point of view instead of hers, would you ever think of me as an angel? Could I ever make you care? I know that deep inside of you, you adore me,but you’re just scared, afraid to admit how much you love the Snow White Queen.

This Grimm Diaries Prequels are a number of short books in the form of epistolary diary entries. The diaries are more of teasers for the upcoming series: The Grimm Diaries, allowing you to get a glimpse of what to expect of the series.

REVIEW:

Man, I liked this very short story. I liked where it was all going because I had no clues of what happened to Snow and why The Evil Queen claimed herself less blameable regarding Snow’s story. Its content is mysterious and, even though I thought I’d hate narcissistic Evil Queen, I ended up enjoying her personality and wanted to hear more of how much she loved herself.

I in fact never thought I’d say that one day…

I think that I’ve been compelled, guys. Watch out for The Evil Queen.

What you read above is what I thought I would say after starting the book…

Before The Evil Queen began saying things that brought her out of her character—the character I thought she was playing.

I just can’t stand it when characters go like this:

‘Sorry, I am a queen. I am spoiled, I am evil, I am bad. And I am dumb and an airhead. (…)’

Stop lowering yourself is the nicest thing I can think of saying right now to The Evil (Whiny) Queen.

Or when they talk like that:

‘Gag! Don’t even mention her to me. I hate her guts, that silly giggling woman.’

Fairy tale retellings are of my favourites genres. I can NEVER get enough of them because there are infinite possibilities (and I wish to know them all.)

Don’t look for a detailed world-building inside Snow White Blood Red or multiple secondary characters. As the title says, this is a prequel and will feel like it. It also contains a prequel to itself which I thought was not that necessary and I didn’t like the way it was written.

It’s funny because this book doesn’t take itself seriously when the matters and story inside it are…and at the same time don’t quite feel like they are. I am quite confused right now.

Though, now that I’ve read the author’s profile, I understand it more and feel like Mr. Jace gave a piece of himself to some of the characters and who knows what else (need to make some more research on him.)

In general, the writing is good but could obviously have been better. There are some repetitions here and there. For example:

As much as she tried to press on my thumb with all her might, her skin felt like silk around my flesh and I wished she’d never let go of me. It was true that I was her mother and she needed me to never let go of her, but little did she know that I didn’t want her to let go of me.

The author is pretty much going round and round with that quote.

Also, I am not in agreement with this:

‘You just can’t. There are some rules that girls should follow without asking.’

Now I won’t make a debate about it, but I believe the author should have written, if he REALLY wanted that phrase to appear in his book, ‘princesses’ instead of ‘girls’ because the word ‘girls’ includes too many people and different populations with a different rank and culture (in that time—19th century.) And what are those many rules anyway? Explanations would have been welcomed to clarify that which is apparently a ‘fact.’

Overall, I think this CAN be a promising prequel series and I will definitely continue with it; maybe a lovely surprise will await us in the sequels.

  1. There’s a prequel to the prequel included? That’s interesting:) Like you Lola, fairytale retellings are some of my favorite stories out there and I can never turn one down! You have me curious about this one and the evil queen even though it clearly didn’t blow you away with its awesomeness. So enjoyed you review!

  2. Sounds very confusing. I like world building and great secondary characters, so I think I’ll pass on this one, but great Review Lola:) Hope the next one works out better for you!

  3. I always saw this around, but as much as I love retellings I could never see myself liking this one. I was right. The cover alone makes me want to ignore it just because it looks so much like Fallen . Also, whiny characters just make me want to roll my eyes all the time. A prequel of a prequel? Sounds confusing. I’ll pass, lol. Great review!

    • That’s exactly what I was thinking!! I like the colours of the title and stuff but the design and character not really…Yeah the prequel to the prequels was original though understandable I guess since there will be many prequels. Well, you won’t miss that much although maybe the sequels are better. Thank you!

  4. Hey Lola! (:

    Haha, at first when I was reading your review I was like damn O.o This one sounds great, why did you only rate it two stars?? Then I read on and I think I understand more clearly now [;

Alike you, I adore Fairytale retellings! I love it when a familiar story is turned onto its head and then spun into something new, meanwhile retaining a few classic elements.

This one seems a bit confusing though, lol think this would be heightened for me as I’ve never read any of the author’s other works. The Queen’s character also seems to be acting quite out of character, given the quotes you’ve shown in the review. She seems a lot less powerful and more of a weaker character, which to me doesn’t really jibe with the original in any way, shape or form.

Lovely review girl! Just don’t think this one is for me.

    • Hi, Larissa! 😀

      I know hahaha XD
Fairy tale are awesome! Especially when there are about your favorite characters! I can’t wait to see if any of the prequels is narrated by Mulan or Rapunzel!!
Exactly, Larissa, you put the rights words in there. She does feel weaker than she ‘normally’ should be. And I don’t think it’s such a great thing to change fairy tale characters’ personalities!

Thanks a lot! And I understand that 🙂 Maybe the sequels are better, I’ll try to write a review for them as well when I’ll read them.

  5. I recently read this as well and a series of short stories and it was interesting. I still don’t know how I completely feel about them but I agree with you that they do show promise and more than likely at some point in time I will pick up the next ones and try again to see what the author does with them.

  6. I love fairy tale retellings so much. Like you said there’s just so many possibilities. But I have to admit I was pretty confused with this book and that’s not a good thing when you’re doing a retelling. I feel like the best retellings are those that are quite similar to its original source. But in this book, it skeeems li the Evil Queen is as confused as we are. Haha! Nevertheless, great review Lola! 😀

  7. Fairytale retellings are a hit or miss for me. I’m sorry to hear this one is mostly a miss and didn’t quite work out for you. At least the succeeding stories in the prequel series looks promising! I hope you’ll like them better.

    • Thank you! 🙂 I haven’t checked the sequels out yet but they will be with other fairy tale characters and can’t wait to read about their stories. I just hope it’s not as different from the Disney version and confusing as this one was.

  8. Hmm doesn’t quite seem like worth reading. Sometimes prequels are just a waste because they don’t add to the story and don’t really feel all that interesting. Great review!

  9. Aww, sorry you didn’t really like this one as much. 😦 Personally I did, but it wasn’t my favorite prequel. My favorite is actually Ladle Rat Rotten Hut. 😀
Hope your next prequel read is better! 😀

  10. Hmm… I’ve heard about this author’s books before. They didn’t really captivate me too much, so I kind of stayed away from them. I love fairy-tale retellings, but something about this one made me gear away for a moment. I’m very pleased to see that a fellow blogger friend of mine has read it! I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy this one too much. Repetition is a little too exhausting to deal with in a book, so I think I’m going to stay away from this. It sounds pretty absurd for a short story as well.

I hope that you’ll enjoy your next read, Lola!

  11. I love a good retelling as well, Lola. In fact, I have this series on my Kindle, yet I still need to read them. Hopefully it’s just this prequel – I’ve heard mixed reviews on the series so I plan on keeping my eyes on for now. Thanks for the thoughtful review 🙂
